Ska is fun to listen and dance to, but have you ever tried to play it? It is definitely not the easiest to learn. Punk bands use a lot of this type of music in their songs as they have all the correct instruments and know how to play certain sounds, but with ska, you can never have too much practice. When practicing to play this type of music, the instruments that are normally used are typical rock instruments and horns. But then again it would depend on how you are going about your music – just general ska, or a slight mixture of ska with a bit of the punk bands rock.

You must first learn to play the guitar the correct way. There are certain chords that have to be learned as well as a combination of certain instruments played simultaneously with others. You will need more than one person and more than one instrument to master the sounds and get the right play, but that will come with time. Watch a few punk bands play their instruments and listen to the way they make it harmonize and blend. It may sound weird in the beginning, but once you learn the guitar at least, you will recognize a few chords and sounds.

Then there is the horn. It sounds easy to blow a horn, but you have to blow it the right way, and the way you blow it has to be in tune with song that is playing. You cannot play the same sound all the time and expect it to sound good. You have to master all the different sounds you can make and then put it together with the songs you have. When you know how to play the instruments, put them to the test with some ska music and music from other punk bands. Watch your progress over time and you will see great improvements!
