Sure it sounds like fun to be in a punk band, or even to be in a ska band, but there are really a few things you should be aware of before you make that decision. In actual fact, being in any band and being cheered on stage, being clapped for, having people sing your songs; it all sounds like a dream come true, and it could be if you listen to some sound advise before jumping right in. If you know of a band that is looking for a new member and you consider yourself to be a bit of a punk or ska rocker, go ahead, sign up. There’s nothing wrong with that, just take note of your appearance beforehand. You need to look “punky” and cool.

When you decide to join a punk band, know that no matter how long you stay in the band for, if you become popular you are going to have to keep your appearance. You will always have to look the way you fans know you, being in a punk band does not mean you can shave off all your hair and go out in shorts and a T-shirt with no shoes – that’s not punk. Even with ska, that is not the way to go. So that is the first important thing to remember, your appearance needs to stay the same, at least for a few years before you make a slight modification to get people to take note of you and respect you.

Most importantly, you have to have fun and give your fans what they want to hear. Create your own songs, have local concerts until you get known, then you can tour the world if it beckons! Touring the world will involve you and your band members investing in appropriate equipment that will allow you to sound as good as possible. You will also need to invest in a form of transport that you and your band can travel around in with all of the equipment. If you haven't a van already it is always advised for a group to purchase one. Ensure that you also have relevant van insurance cover in case of an accident or theft. You can find cheap deals by visiting Yell.com or for even cheaper deals Quotzone.com. Safety on the roads is crucial if you are going to be travelling a lot.

Before you decide to join a band it may be an idea to go to other punk bands concerts, pick up tips and pointers, take note of the way they do things, and use all of this to improve on your punk songs and music. Even add a bit of ska into your music to make it unique, or make it unique another way. Most of all, love what you are doing! There is a great article on the BBC News Website about a Brief History of Punk which may help to inspire you in your decision in joining a Punk band.
