So, you want to be a ska rocker? Or you want to be like one of the famous punk bands there are already so many of? Well firstly, good for you for knowing what you want and following your dreams as far enough as reading this, but please do know that you do not have an easy smooth road ahead. If you think you have what it takes, form a band. A solo member in this genre doesn’t always seem to do so well, but hey, you could always be the first. Also, you would need to be able to play a few instruments and sing at the same time, so maybe you should just stick to getting a good band together.
Once you have a band that you think can eventually go up against one of the known punk bands, practice, practice and practice some more. You can never practice too much when you are interested in pursuing a career with ska music, as it is not always easy. When you have your band together and you have practiced till you can’t anymore, for at least 6 months to a year – start doing small gigs. You could play at your school one day, just to see the reaction you get and get yourselves known a bit, and then you can go on from there to play at house parties and other places where ska is big. You can even have a small party/gig wherever your practice normally takes place and once you are really good you start charging your fans for entrance, and make sure you are one of the best punk bands in town!
You can’t charge them yet because they don’t know exactly how good your ska music is; first tease them with free entries and when they want more they will pay for it! That is how you get recognized, like the true punk bands, what you do after then is entirely up to you. Lastly, whatever money you make, use for the band and not yourself!
